Why Health & Safety Matter in Mityana

A child’s health should never depend on whether treatment can be paid for in time.

Mityana’s 2024 census recorded 2,674 people with health insurance in a population of 407,386, less than 1% of the population. This does not mean that everyone else has no access to public health services; it shows how limited insurance protection is against the financial risk of care.

Malaria remains a major health burden in Uganda. A WHO Uganda publication reports more than 16 million malaria cases and 2,793 deaths in 2023, with most deaths affecting children under five.

In 2025, a measles outbreak investigation in Mityana documented 100 cases, a median age of three years and one child death.

For Purple Rose, Health & Safety means prevention, early attention and access to treatment: vaccinations, hygiene, mosquito protection, health checks, tests, medicines and timely medical care.

When children are protected, treated early and cared for consistently, they have a far better chance to stay safe, recover well and continue growing and learning.
