Good nutrition is about more than having enough food.
In Uganda, national data show that 26% of children aged 6–59 months are affected by stunting, a sign of long-term impaired growth linked to inadequate nutrition, repeated illness and other conditions affecting a child’s development.
Among young children aged 6–23 months, only 10% received foods from at least five of the eight key food groups, and only 7% met the standard for a minimum acceptable diet.
These figures show that the challenge is not only whether children eat, but also what they eat and whether their diet gives them the variety they need to grow well.
In Mityana District, 59,899 children are aged 0–4, which means a very large number of children are in the stage of life when nutrition has a particularly strong effect on physical growth, brain development and long-term health.
For Purple Rose, Food & Nutrition therefore means more than placing food on the table. It means regular meals, milk, fruit, vegetables and a varied, balanced diet that supports healthy growth, learning and everyday wellbeing.
