Γιατί η Ουγκάντα;

Ίδια δικαιώματα, διαφορετική αφετηρία.

A child’s rights do not change depending on where that child is born. Every child deserves safe living conditions, adequate nutrition, healthcare and education.

What can be very different is access to the conditions that make those rights a reality.

A safe place to grow

In 2024, 97% of people in Greece used safely managed drinking water services, compared with 18% in Uganda. Safely managed sanitation showed another substantial difference: 93% in Greece and 20% in Uganda.

For a child, water and sanitation are not simply infrastructure. They are part of everyday health, hygiene, safety and dignity.

Enough food is not the whole story

Good nutrition is about more than having enough food. It also means receiving the nutrients needed for healthy physical and cognitive development.

In the latest common internationally comparable dataset, 2% of children under five in Greece and 23% in Uganda were affected by stunting. Stunting reflects impaired growth associated with long-term nutritional, health and care conditions.

A very different health risk

In 2024, the under-five mortality rate was 3.8 deaths per 1,000 live births in Greece and 48.7 in Uganda. In the infographic these figures are rounded to 4 and 49.

This indicator reflects many factors together, including prevention, nutrition, living conditions and timely access to healthcare.

Going to school is not the same as completing school

UNESCO’s internationally comparable modeled data for 2024 estimate primary education completion at approximately 99% in Greece and 35% in Uganda.

Completion is different from simply enrolling in school. A child may start school and still face barriers that make regular attendance, learning and ultimately completing primary education difficult.

Why Uganda?

Not because children in Uganda have different rights.

Because many children begin life with very different access to the conditions that help those rights become reality.

Purple Rose cannot change the circumstances of an entire country. What we can do is change those circumstances for the children in our care by providing stability, nutritious food, healthcare, education and consistent daily support.

The rights are the same. The starting point is not.
