Why Education Matters in Mityana

Education can change the direction of a child’s life. But access to school is only the beginning.

Mityana’s 2024 census recorded 15,024 children aged 6–12 out of school, or 18.6%, and 28.6% of children aged 13–17 not attending school. It also recorded 7,704 six-year-olds who had not yet started Primary School.

Attendance does not automatically mean learning. In the National Assessment 2023 results published in Uganda’s Education Statistics Abstract 2025, 45.8% of assessed Primary 6 learners in Mityana reached the expected proficiency level in English literacy. That figure is an assessment result, not an “illiteracy rate”.

Universal Primary Education does not remove every cost that can keep a child from school. Uniforms, books, stationery, meals and other practical school costs can still matter.

For Purple Rose, education is therefore not simply about paying school fees. It is about consistent attendance, uniforms, books, materials, meals and learning support so that children can stay in school and continue learning.

Education gives children more than knowledge. It gives them a stronger chance to build confidence, independence and a different future.
